Homeless people living at Surbiton’s YMCA centre have launched their own surprise bid to reach this year’s Christmas Number One.

The song, called Soon Be Christmas, sees staff and residents unite to discuss the challenges of homelessness over the holiday season.

The festive hit was penned by staff member and professional song writer Karina Thomas at a workshop with homeless people back in October.

She said: “There are so many talented people who just need the opportunity. This could change lives of the residents enabling them to secure a brighter future, or launch their music career.

“We gave residents of the YMCA the opportunity to be creative and now we have a potential hit Christmas song. They are talented and just need a chance.

“It looks like we could have our very own Band Aid YMCA Christmas song.”

The group, collectively known as Kareene and the Soon Be Christmas Band, first recorded the single as a rough demo at Surbiton’s YMCA in October, before It was then re-written, redeveloped and mixed at a private studios in Chessington.

It is now ready for a late assault on the Christmas charts and is available to download from iTunes.

The single will be met with stiff competition this year, with the current favorite for the craved prize of Christmas Number One the Friends of Jo Cox charity single.

The group are not to only south Londoners to launch a Christmas single this month.

Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhan McDonough has joined fellow Labour MPs for a protest single against retailers cutting workers’ perks.

Bromley resident Matt Terry, 23, will also battle it out for number one after winning the popular ITV show the X Factor.
