Should the circus come rolling into Kingston or simply pass the borough by?

Kingston Council is looking to answer the question by hosting a two-week trial funfair next month to test the waters ahead of a planned change to its events policy that would permit a “small number of funfairs and circuses” each year.

The Fairfield Recreation Ground will host Irvin’s Funfair, a family-oriented fair that also runs at Hampton Court, from Monday, July 4, to Monday, July 18.

Cllr Phil Doyle, cabinet member for parks and open spaces, said: “We are very lucky to have a range of parks and open spaces within the borough.

“We have specifically chosen Irvin’s Family Funfair, who operate in neighbouring Hampton Court, because of their family friendly atmosphere. They also employ a strict no alcohol rule.”

Currently only one circus is allowed per year. But the authority proposes considering additional visits on a case-by-case basis.

Kingston Council consulted with residents near the Fairfield in 2012 about what types of events they wanted in the park, and said “most were in favour of more funfairs”.

Tessa Kind, chairman of the Mill Street residents’ association, said: “It will be interesting to see if the benefits are going to outweigh the negatives.

“I’m relying on the residents to report whether it’s good or bad. We will see, at least they’re having a trial.”
