Fire crews were called just after 7:30pm to the large fire at an industrial yard in Old Malden Lane.
Police have confirmed that burning tyres are causing the excessive amounts of black smoke.
Road closures are in place in Barrow Hill and Old Malden Lane.
Kingston police have warned residents in the area to keep their windows and doors shut.
A Kingston firefighter said: “We were called to reports of thick black smoke. We have sent a pump but Surrey firefighters are leading. We have heard it is tyres on fire.”
