Two Kingston police officers have been left with “quite serious injuries” after being assaulted in New Malden.

Police were called to Kingston Road at about 5am on Wednesday to reports of a theft and two people throwing bottles at the caller.

The two suspects “violently fought” the officers and punched them in the head as they tried to run, according to police.

A police spokesman said: “While we were making our way to the scene the officers were updated via the radio that the suspects were now attacking the caller with bottles.

“They fought police violently attempting to get away, the officers were punched in the head and kicked in the legs leaving them with quite serious injuries.”

Two people Have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and theft.

Both have been bailed until late May.
