Kingston University will show off revised plans for a new £55m landmark in Penrhyn Road after councillors vetoed the previous design for looking like a World War II "flak tower".
The 9,320 sq m town house building was too bulky, councillors said in March.
Architects have now reduced the size by 300 sq m, set the two-to-six-storey building back another 1m and made it lighter at higher levels.
The town house is a significant part of an £80m investment programme by the university and Kingston Council planning chiefs have recommended it be approved.
Also on the agenda for next Tuesday's development control committee meeting is a mixed-use scheme with 31 homes on the site of the old Sir Robert Peel pub, and a four-to-five-storey block of flats in Cowleaze Road.
Councillors will debate the plans from 7.30pm in Guildhall.
