Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire behind a disused restaurant that saw New Malden High Street closed for two hours yesterday.

Thick black smoke was spotted rising from a single-storey building behind the restaurant, near the Fountain roundabout, at about 6am yesterday.

The building runs behind the restaurant and a cafe that is still operating, and both parts were affected by the flames, Wimbledon firefighters said.

The blaze in the boarded-up building was under control in "a matter of minutes", they added.

Buses were diverted during the road closure.
