The Wimbledon tennis championships is set to serve up a windfall for homeowners in and around the SW19 area.

With players, officials, sponsors and media companies all needing accommodation, property owners are in line for a cash bonanza with the potential to get a month's rent in just one week.

Driveways also provide a source of extra money if residents offer them as parking spaces.

Letting spare rooms can be lucrative too.

Edward Foley, director of the Wimbledon branch of estate and lettings agency Winkworth, said: "It's a big shot in the arm for a lot of local people and there's a great atmosphere.

"People whose children have fled the nest often make a bit of money renting out rooms to umpires and officials.

"Some families decamp for the tournament and people like Lleyton Hewitt come and stay a month because they are also playing at Queen's.

"Demand increases around four-fold for this very specific market that lasts just two to four weeks.

"It depends on the property but people can get £3,500 to £4,000 for a one-bedroom flat.”

People living in areas surrounding the All England Club can make thousands of pounds by opening up a spare room to visitors, according to Airbnb.

Demand for rooms soars by 15 per cent during Wimbledon compared to other summer weeks, the lodging website said.

Hosts can earn an average of £116 a night during the tournament in districts such as Richmond, Kingston, Wandsworth, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Sutton and Croydon.

James McClure, country manager for Airbnb UK, said: "London is bursting with demand for places to stay and events like Wimbledon certainly add extra pressure."
