Commuters are being blocked from descending onto Surbiton station's platform one as signalling problems delay trains by 40 minutes.

Queues for the busy platform extend out of the station but operator South West Trains has told passengers not to expect service to Waterloo for nearly three-quarters of an hour.

The signal has been fixed but disruption is expected to last until 11am.

The operator said: "A signalling problem near Surbiton means trains are being delayed by up to 40 minutes between Woking and Wimbledon.

"Trains towards London are unable to call at Berrylands. Passengers may use the K2 bus service. This is expected to continue until 11am."

Surbiton commuter Emma Bream, who works in Wimbledon - normally an eight-minute hop away - said: "I wish this was more of a one-off but it's every month I seem to suffer at least one significant delay.

"I know sometimes they can't be helped but you would think, considering how much I pay for my season ticket, they would have signal boxes that worked."

Elsewhere even the police have got involved, advising passengers to go underground in the Wandsworth area to avoid congestion.

Signalling problems have also hit London Waterloo, causing similar 40-minute delays both in- and outbound. Disruption could last until 2pm. National Rail listed the following service changed:

  • Trains between London Waterloo and Salisbury will run between Salisbury and Basingstoke.
  • Trains between London Waterloo and Shepperton will be diverted via Richmond and will no longer call via Kingston.
  • Trains between London Waterloo and Dorking / Chessington South / Hampton Court are cancelled
  • Trains are unable to call at Berrylands
