A tech-savvy, retired pianist celebrated her 100th birthday by singing cockney songs in one of her favourite pubs.

Betty Szarowicz celebrated the milestone with a knees-up at the Station pub in Stoneleigh on Sunday.

The centenarian sung a selection of her music hall favourites for friends and family, and was seated in a throne and given a crown.

Mrs Szarowicz was a professional pianist into her 90’s and still plays every day.

She also uses her iPad to play bridge at her home in New Malden, where she still lives independently.

Her daughter in law Karen Szarowicz said: “Betty has led a very interesting life.

"Her father was a pianist and songwriter and her mother was a wardrobe mistress in the theatre, working with many famous actors.

“She had such a good time singing her favourite songs. ‘Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner’ was a real highlight.

“It’s great she is still very modern and uses her iPad to keep in touch with us.”

Mrs Szarowicz chose Stoneleigh for her party as she moved there from Russell Square when she married and then settled in New Malden after her husband died.

She said: “I had the most wonderful party.

"I think it was the best birthday yet. All of my existing family were there and everybody was so happy.

“It was so much fun to play all my music hall favourites for my family. Everyone was smiling.”

Mrs Szarowicz has two sons, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
