A son surprised his parents by bringing them back to the same pub in which they married to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary.

Former seaman Peter Gibbs, 89, who served on HMS Wellington during the Second World War, and his wife Poppy, 85, visited the Brave New World pub in Berrylands where they tied the knot in 1950, when it was called the Bun Shop.

The visit was organised by son Robert Gibbs as part of his plan to give the couple as many happy memories as possible, in what could be their final year together.

Mrs Gibbs, a retired former school dinner lady and domestic, has been given less than a year to live after having cancer diagnosed.

Robert said: “We are trying to create as many happy memories as we can for them as when the time comes we would all like happy recent memories.

“Both of them were surprised. They thought they were going up to see a friend in Box Hill for Sunday lunch. But we wanted to create a recent memory where all their kids, nieces, grandchildren and friends came round. It was a great day.

The family get together at the Brave New World in Surbtion, 64 years after Peter and Poppy married there, when it was called  the Bun Shop

“They are just two people who are very well-loved and respected. We wanted to do this for them.

“They are like two peas in a pod.”

The Gibbs, from Surbiton also cut a cake in front of friends and family on Sunday, November 2.

Mr Gibbs senior, also a former Surbiton Lagoon lifeguard, said: “When we pulled up outside the Brave New World I thought ‘Well what’s going on here?’ “It was lovely to see everyone, all the generations.

“We had such a nice time. I have had so many happy memories with Poppy too – she is beautiful.”
