A Worcester Park play area created from East End rubble after the Blitz will be cleaned up thanks to the efforts of residents.

Risborough Green, behind Pembury Avenue, is a raised field where children play football - but overgrown foliage has rendered its banks a "wasteland" and have even prevented residents parking in their garages.

Kingston Council has promised to tidy up the sides of the field backing onto residents' access roads.

Ken Platten, 78, of Pembury Avenue, said: "The surroundings of it haven't been touched for years.

"I've been fighting this battle for years."

The grassy plateau was created from the remains of houses bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War.

Truckloads of rubble were taken to outlying boroughs.

In the late 1980s it was decided to convert the debris into a playing field.

The flat top has been regularly maintained, but the sides have overgrown and become a dumping ground by flytippers.

Old Malden councillor Mary Clark said: "All these houses have been looking out over wasteland.

"It's devaluing the properties.

"They've got the playing field, but now I'm going to try and get some equipment up there too."

A Kingston Council spokesman said: "The council will tidy up the banks and cut the greenery there later this year."
