The headteacher of Southborough High School has said he was "very frustrated" to have to close after a power cut in Surbiton.

Niall Smith said he had no choice but to send pupils home this morning because the power failure knocked out fire alarms, lighting, and catering.

Power has now been restored.

He said:"I can’t operate a school with no fire alarm.

"It put me in a very difficult situation."

Mr Smith said the power cut also hit the Ace of Spades Shell garage and the Cap in Hand pub.

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: "Power was interrupted at about 7.30am today, with engineers working through the morning to ensure supplies were restored.

"This happened at 11.15am.

"We appreciate how difficult it can be to lose power and would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this incident."
