Oliver Cotton’s critically acclaimed play Daytona comes to the Rose Theatre next month and for actor John Bowe the run will be something of a homecoming.

“I spent many years living in that area long before the Rose was open,” says Bowe, who now lives in Dorset.

“I’ve lived in Teddington, I’ve lived in Richmond, I’ve lived in Kingston and I lived in Surbiton many years ago. I’ve spent many years in south-west London and I love it and do miss it.

“I love that whole area so I am looking forward to seeing the Rose because a friend of mine, Judi Dench, was there last year or the year before, I remember her doing Titania [In A Midsumer Night’s Dream] and I didn’t get a chance to see her, so I am looking forward to seeing what the theatre is like.

“Bentalls, I’m on the way.”

Daytona, directed by David Grindley and starring Bowe, Maureen Lipman and The Simpsons star Harry Shearer, is about the relationship between a man and his wife, whose brother, Bowe, returns having disappeared 30 years beforehan

Bowe says that working with Lipman and Shearer is a joy. He says: “I think the three of us really understand the people that we’re playing and there is a tremendous amount of trust on stage.

“Harry is a god because of all his work on The Simpsons, Spinal Tap and all the rest of it and we have a right good laugh.

“And Maureen I absolutely adore. We twinkle our way through part two but I won’t elaborate on that anymore because that will give away some of the story.

“But that has been the major joy of doing this production, working with both Maureen and Harry.”
