A tough guy competition at Chinthurst School raised a whopping £3,000 for charity earlier this month.

Schoolboys were left muddy but delighted after raising thousands for underprivileged children in a township in South Africa.

Despite the cold weather competitors dressed in traditional warrior regalia as they made their way around the assault course and swimming pool.

The course was designed by Spencer Stephens, who put the 60 competitors - aged between 6 and 13 - through their paces.

Mr Stephens said: "To their credit, all the runners finished the course and it was fantastic to see such determination in all the age ranges.

"All the money raised goes to help underprivileged children in a township in South Africa under the watchful eye of the Kusasa Project.

"Year 7 and 8 boys will now be able to deliver a wide range of equipment and clothing when we embark on our South African rugby tour in April."

Headmaster, Ian Thorpe, was delighted with the event.

"It was hugely impressive to see such determination from the boys and support from so many parents," he said.

"Next year, the event will take on another new feel, with the first Tough Girls Challenge following our move to co-education this April."
