Meeting set to decide on controversial Epsom Station re-development

A special meeting has been scheduled to decide on a controversial re-development proposed for Epsom Station.

The meeting to decide on Solum Regeneration’s plans to revamp Epsom Station is due to take place on April 22, Epsom and Ewell council announced last week.

The controversial £20m development, when first announced, was criticised by residents in the area.

Edward Rose, a cabbie who has been based at Epsom station for 26 years, was horrified when he saw the plans for the development displayed at the Ebbisham Centre last year.

He said: “I am not against a development at Epsom station – I am against this because of the size of it. People need to look at these plans and ask themselves ‘Is this really what we want for Epsom?’.”

Protesters also took to the streets last year with placards to show their disapproval of the planning application.

Plans include a £4.5m investment in the station, up to 120 affordable homes, a 60 to 70-bedroom hotel, shop units, a small food store and a cafe and restaurant. Part of the development will be up to seven stories.

There will be no designated parking for the hotel staff or customers and limited parking for people in the 120 new homes.

They will be encouraged to join a car club rather than have their own vehicles.
