Two women have been arrested in a Surrey Police operation against the smuggling of illicit drugs into High Down prison.
After being alerted by a sniffer dog, officers arrested one visitor on suspicion of possessing a Class A drug with intent to supply.
Two days later, on Thursday, June 25, a second woman was arrested on suspicion of having an illegal substance with intent to supply.
The arrests follow the introduction of new security devices to prevent the supply of narcotics in prisons around England and Wales.
Peter Dawson, governor at the category-B jail on the border of Sutton and Banstead, said: “This an excellent result to the operations which have prevented Class A and Class B drugs from entering the prison.
“It reaffirms our intention to intercept drugs destined for prisoners and, where possible, seek the prosecution of those responsible for their supply.
“The presence of drugs in prisons undermines our ability to encourage and support prisoners to focus on addressing their offending behaviour and is often the catalyst for incidents of violence, bullying and self-harm in the prison.”
Detective Constable Simon Gray, of Reigate CID, said: “These arrests signify a very positive result for the agencies concerned and show that Surrey Police is working alongside its partners to stop the use and supply of illegal substances wherever possible.
“Drugs ruin lives and affect everyone in the community and we will continue to actively stop their supply wherever and whenever possible.”
Julia Blowers, 34, of Highclere Court, Knaphill, was charged with possession of a Class B substance and bailed to appear before magistrates in Redhill on Thursday.
A woman aged 32, from Mitcham, was bailed to appear at Reigate police station on Tuesday, August 18.
