Surrey County Council is set to receive a one-star rating from the Audit Commission, placing it alongside some of the worst performing local authorities in the country.

The Audit Commission is expected to announce its drop from three stars when the annual ratings are announced later this month.

It is the lowest rating that can be handed to a local authority and symbolises inadequate performance over the year. Four stars represent above minimum requirements.

Last July’s Ofsted report into children’s services in the county produced an “inadequate” rating when it was revealed criminal record checks were not carried out on staff and files were out of date.

Although areas such as recycling and highways have improved, the county automatically receives one-star if an area receives a poor rating.

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said it was more important what the residents of Surrey thought.

Results from the Audit Commission’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment will be announced on February 26.
