Surrey County Council set to receive one-star rating

Surrey County Council is set to receive a one-star rating from the Audit Commission, placing it alongside some of the worst performing local authorities in the country.

The Audit Commission is expected to announce its drop from three stars when the annual ratings are announced later this month.

It is the lowest rating that can be handed to a local authority and symbolises inadequate performance over the year. Four stars represent above minimum requirements.

Last July’s Ofsted report into children’s services in the county produced an “inadequate” rating when it was revealed criminal record checks were not carried out on staff and files were out of date.

Although areas such as recycling and highways have improved, the county automatically receives one-star if an area receives a poor rating.

Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said it was more important what the residents of Surrey thought.

Results from the Audit Commission’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment will be announced on February 26.

No surprise to any resident who pays any attention whatsoever to the maintenance, or rather lack of maintenance, of their local environment.
The surprising thing is that the Audit Commission has at long last noticed how very very bad the performance of Surrey County Council has been for years and years.
The evidence is everywhere to be seen, and read about in the local and national press.
The recycling policy and practice is not good and was needlessly costly to introduce.
To say that Highway Maintenance has improved is not supported by even casual observation of the state of roads and pavements. Repairs are executed in a pathetically slow manner. They are also invariably executed badly because of either poor specification or poor workmanship.

The roads around Chessington are a disgrace ... pot hole after pot hole when they eventually repair them it's a bodge up job which goes back to the same state after a few weeks ...and we're the most expensive borough for council tax!!!

The underlying reason is that Surrey has always, always been run by one party and they have grown slack and lazy because they know they are there for ever

When you drive from Surrey into Kingston there is a noteable change in the quality of the roads.

I remember reading an article in the sun a few years ago about Surrey's roads contractor. They were recorded doing half an hour's work in a whole day, the rest of the time spent sleeping in their van.

On the plus side they have just fixed a street light near my house that has been on for over 3 years. It's progress I suppose.

? BURST TYRE - CROYDON LANE, BANSTEAD, 19 JANUARY 2009.
Highway maintenance in Surrey has certainly not improved.
I was driving along Croydon Lane, Banstead on the above date and hit a HUGE pot hole which burst my tyre, pulling into Longcroft Avenue to get off the road there were three other cars there with exactly the same problem, front passenger tyre burst.
I wrote to the council, they deny that there has been any problems in that area, no other reports of incidents and state that even if I did hit a pot hole, the road was last inspected on November 18th 2008 and no defects found. They state and that the authority is not liable for any problems which manifest themselves between one inspection date and the next unless they have been informed.(they inspect quarterly) I went back two days later and saw an extensive repair had been made to the road. Did anyone else report this huge "hole" to Surrey County Council or suffer the consequence of paying for a new tyre.?
