An Englishman ironically scored a consolation goal for Scotland at Celtic Park, Glasgow, yesterday.
The final score was 6-2 to England in car manufacturer Vauxhall’s fan game just hours before the national teams took to the pitch when England won 3-1.
Alex Hallet, who sells Vauxhall cars at Wilsons in Kiln Lane, Epsom, and lives in Amber Court, Mitcham, played alongside celebrities, ex-pros and other fans.
His team was led out by former Scotland manager Craig Brown and the English team was led out by former manager Terry Venables.
Given he is not Scottish, Mr Hall said: "It was a bit awkward scoring against England. I’m a complete football fan so to play in something like that was just amazing.
"It didn’t feel real. I felt like I was dreaming a little bit. I was very nervous."
Mr Hallet won an online competition run by Vauxhall.
Maria Gabriels, marketing executive at Wilsons, said: "He entered the competition because of his passion for football and never imagined winning until two days ago when he received a phone call saying that he won a place on the Scottish team to play against England."
Mr Hallet left yesterday morning at 5am to get to the match.
Ms Gabrials said: "All Wilsons staff were at their PCs whilst trying to work, watching the game and cheering for Alex."
