A charity fundraising dinner to remember the service of local regiments, past and present, raised over £1,000 for service charities.

The Epsom and Ewell Conservative Association event took place last week at the Epsom Beefeater in honour of the local regiment and to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.

Past services were remembered through the East Surrey regiment’s contribution to the First World War and specifically their courage under fire in battle, such as at Hill 60 in 1915.

Their descendants, the 'Tigers', officially the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (PWRR), which served with great distinction recently in Afghanistan and Iraq, were represented at the dinner.

Captain Andrew Richardson, the adjutant of 3rd battalion of the PWRR, spoke on behalf of the regiment about the diverse roles it undertakes.

World War I battlefield tour guide Sophie Shrubsole recounted East Surrey’s contribution to early war campaigns and showed how World War I continues to impact our lives and dialect.

Two speakers, a raffle, an auction and donations raised funds to be split between veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress and the PWRR Benevolence Fund supporting the regiment's soldiers in need.
