An Epsom band has rocked its way into a 'battle-of-the-bands' final which will see it competing for the chance to support Biffy Clyro at a sell-out London show.

Brightlight City beat thousands of rivals to be shortlisted as one of the top five bands in the competition, organised by the Relentless Energy drinks company.

The Scottish rock band will be performing live at London's Troxy on November 22.

The winning band in the competition will be the one which receives the most votes online.

People attending the battle-of-the-bands final on Sunday, October, 26, will also be able to vote on their favourite performance of the night.

The band with the most votes altogether will be crowned the winner.

The band is currently neck and neck with competing band, Huxtable, who have the advantage of coming from the same town as Biffy Clyro, Kilmarnock.

Brightlight City consists of vocalist Jamie Giarraputo, 30, bassist Dan Stubberfield, 30, drummer Ben Bell, 27, and guitarists Jono Staunton and Justin Giarraputo, both 30.

The boys attended Glyn and Blenheim High Schools and knew each other from school and the gigging scene.  The band formed in 2010, with Ben Bell joining this year.

The drummer describes the group's music as easy-listening, radio-friendly pop rock and said it has a loyal following in the area.

Mr Bell said: "I honestly cannot tell you how over the moon I am.

"Biffy Clyro is my favourite band and I tried unsuccessfully to buy spectator tickets for the Relentless gig originally.

"When we got the email saying we might actually end up playing at it I was pretty emotional - you couldn’t make it up.

"It would mean the absolute world to us to win - the doors it could open and the potential it has for us is huge."

The band is marketing itself on social media and Mr Bell admits they have been pulling their hair out over trying to get votes sensibly without annoying anyone.

They have supported Bastille, are currently touring the UK, played recently at Jamie Oliver’s Big Feastival and are releasing their debut EP on October 27.

"You can only try, and we are definitely trying," concluded Mr Bell.

The battle-of-the-bands final will be held at 5 Denmark Street, London, on Sunday, from 7pm.  There will be free entry and drinks.
