Three teenage boys have been arrested after a spate of opportunistic thefts from cars in Ashtead.

Two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old were arrested in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of stealing from motor vehicles.

Police were called to the Street, Ashtead, at about 3.10am after a man was seen acting suspiciously in the area. Officers then arrested the trio who remain in police custody.

Mole Valley Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Hamlin said: "Over recent weeks we have seen a number of people fall victim to opportunistic thefts from cars and I hope the three arrests go some way to reassure those affected by these crimes."

Between September 3 and September 4, there were eight car break-ins in the Caen Wood Road, Leatherhead Road and Harriotts Lane areas. Loose change, a sat nav, iPod and sunglasses were among the items stolen.

Insp Hamlin said: "Having property stolen which you have worked hard for, is deeply upsetting and the thought of someone invading your personal space such as your vehicle, is an experience which can stay with you for some time.

"Which is why we will work hard to bring those responsible for the thefts to justice.

"There are some steps you can take to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim to car crime including removing your valuables when you are away from your vehicle."

Police advised:

• Always lock your car doors, windows and sunroofs

• Never leave personal possessions in your car

• Do not leave valuables hidden in your boot or under car seats

• Store driving documents at home, not in your car

• Look after your car keys and store them securely
