Police are appealing for help after a seriously injured man was found lying in the middle of the road on Saturday night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after he was found in Breech Lane, Walton-on-the-Hill, at about 1.30am.

It is not known how his injuries were sustained. He remained in a serious condition in St George’s Hospital, Tooting, yesterday.

Temporary Detective Inspector Sailesh Limbachia said: "This is clearly a concerning incident where a man has sustained serious injuries and we need to find how this happened as soon as possible.

"At this stage it is not clear if the man sustained his injuries as a result of a collision with a vehicle, an assault or by some other means so I urgently need to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything late on Saturday evening or in the early hours of this morning."

After the discovery, Breech Lane was closed between Chequers Lane and the St Peter Church of England entrance while investigators examined the scene.

Officers have also reviewed CCTV footage and made house to house enquiries.

DI Limbachia said: "The incident took place close to a main road so I feel certain that residents living in the area or passing pedestrians and motorists must have seen or heard something out of the ordinary.

"The man may have been on a night out in the local area on Saturday so I would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen a man walking in the direction of Breech Lane in the early hours of the morning.

"I would like to reassure residents that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no indication of any wider risk to the local community and we are working closely with the local neighbourhood policing team to keep people updated."
