Firefighters cut free an injured driver after a refrigeration van hit a motorway central reservation and flipped on its side.

The crash happened on the M25 in the clockwise direction between junction 8, for Reigate, and junction 9, for Leatherhead, at 1.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear and an electric saw to cut away the windscreen so paramedics could give first aid and remove the driver.

A Leatherhead fire station spokesman said the white van had been carrying lettuces and a passenger was able to get out. He said: "We had a van hit the central reservation and roll over. We had to cut the side off and get the guy out.

"He had a suspected broken collar bone and was taken to East Surrey Hospital."

He said three lanes were closed as the emergency services dealt with the incident.

An Epsom fire station spokesman said: "We turned up and cut away the windscreen and the ambulance crew climbed in, put a collar on him and walked him out.

"There were heavy tailbacks for a few hours after."

He said a fire engine from Woking also attended the scene.
