Neighbours have spoken about their shock at a double stabbing on Good Friday as the air ambulance service released more details of the victims' injuries.

Kent Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance was called to the incident, in Hook Road, Epsom, at 4.36am, following reports of a serious assault.

They said they took a 19-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man by road to St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the pair had been stabbed and the air ambulance mission report revealed the woman had injuries to her upper arm and thorax, while the man suffered wounds to his head, lower leg and hand.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and was also taken to hospital with head injuries sustained during the attack.  He has since between detained under the Mental Health Act in a secure hospital while the police investigation continues.

The family living in the house where the attack took place are Muslims and attend a local mosque according to neighbours who described them as lovely people.

A woman living across the road from them said: "They are a lovely family and keep themselves to themselves.

"You don’t like this kind of thing happening do you?

"The police were here for three days and nights asking questions but we haven’t really heard much about it."

Another neighbour, who lives opposite the house, and moved in two weeks ago, said he had heard "Chinese whispers" about there being a party at the house that night.

He said a person who works at New Scotland Yard lives on Hook Road and they had suggested that the injuries may have been as a result of an argument between two men over a woman.

But he said: "We don’t know them at all.  It could have just been the three of them in the house though - there were no revellers out on the streets or any loud noise from a party.

"The police have said it’s a totally isolated incident specific to that address which has been resolved.

"The other residents who live here said nothing like this has happened before."

Epsom’s Court ward councillor Sheila Carlson, who lives on Hook Road, said that as well as seeing police tape cordoning off the house, which is close to the roundabout, at the junction of Chase Road, she saw fire engines "in the same vicinity" of the address at 9am on Good Friday.

She said: "There was a big fire in a back garden and so there was a whole mix of emergency services together.  You could see the fire as the smoke was billowing up over the houses."
