The next Royston Pike Lecture will explain how the greatest names in polar exploration discovered the Antarctic region.
Expert Angie Butler will give audiences an insight into this Heroic Age during the forthcoming Royston Pike lecture at Mole Hole on Friday, February 17, from 8pm.
Councillor Jan Fuller said: “At the time of the Heroic Age, Antarctica was an unreachable place visited by few. It was totally unknown and had only been brought to the public knowledge recently.
“Such an exploration was at the limits of human physical endurance. Logistical support was minimal and technology was not sophisticated enough to be of any help.
“The next Royston Pike lecture’s subject is truly fascinating and a real eye opener on the harsh conditions and extreme bravery of the first explorers who set out to conquer such a hostile environment.”
Tickets are priced at £1.90 and will be available at the door. For more information on the lectures call 01372 474568 or visit elmbridge.gov.uk/culture.
