People have been warned to be wary of thieves trying to cash in on their catalytic converters.
Elmbridge Community Safety Partnership said these types of thefts were growing in numbers as the converters contain semi-precious metals that can be sold on.
Elmbridge Community Safety Manager, Peter Kipps, said: “This type of theft originated in America, and has become much more prevalent in the UK recently. I would urge all residents to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and, if you see someone under a vehicle cutting the catalytic converter, dial 999 immediately.”
Taller vehicles, such as 4x4s, are particularly at risk as they have bigger catalytic converters and are more accessible.
The partnership said people should leave their cars in well lit areas and mark their catalytic converters to make them easily identifiable.
