Former rector of St James' Church John Green joined friends of the church to celebrate the group's 30-year anniversary.

The Friends of St James' began when Revd Green invited members of his congregation to discuss the idea of forming a group of people who appreciated the value of the church, even if they did not attend services regularly.

Since its foundation with a flower festival in 1988, the group has raised nearly £180,000 towards repairs and maintenance of St James', designed by John Loughborough Pearson, whose spire can be seen for miles around.

Current chairwoman Margaret Wicks proposed a toast to the charity and invited Revd Green to cut a large birthday cake to mark the Friends' birthday.

This year, the church itself is celebrating its 170th birthday.
