A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a hammer and threatening to kill staff at NatWest in Weybridge High Street.

Surrey Police officers were called to the bank at about 10.45am on Friday after a customer became “verbally aggressive” towards staff.

Officers added that a hammer was later stolen from Robert Dyas, further down the High Street.

Witnesses told this website they saw a man lying on the floor in the bank.

Paul Collins said: “I saw a man lying across the floor being held down. I think he had been pepper-sprayed.

“I thought someone had died.”

Another witness said: “It’s hard to say what's happened as it was really quick. I just heard someone shouting ‘drop it drop it’ as I was talking to the cashier and after that about five police officers ran in to the bank.”

The bank was closed for the rest of the day after the incident.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill, theft and possession of an offensive weapon and has been released on conditional bail until Tuesday, September 20.
