Cranmere Primary School in Esher has been evacuated after staff received a suspicious call this morning.

Children and teachers were evacuated to Esher High School while Surrey Police officers carried out a search of the site at about 10.20am.

The school has now reopened for staff, and children have been collected by parents to return to school tomorrow morning.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said the force is working with partners and investigating it as a “malicious hoax”.

A parent said they had received a text message from the school to say that all the children were safe and the alarm was activated due to a bomb threat.

They said: "We received a text to say it was being evacuated at 11'o'clock, it was due to an emergency alarm. They were out in the playground and then to Esher High.

"I would praise the school for taking the children’s safety as their first priority. I’m just glad that it wasn’t anything serious and we hope it doesn’t happen again."

Bomb threats have reportedly been made to at least 11 other schools around the country today, including in Kent, Hampshire and Bedfordshire.
