Three people have been jailed for their involvement in an "amateurish" failed robbery of a Leatherhead jewellery store where one of them disguised himself in women's clothing.

Surrey Comet:

Ryan Valentine, 39, and Raymond Price, 45, admitted trying to rob Cradler's House Jewellers (pictured above) in Leatherhead High Street on February 19.

Price, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet during the bungled robbery, was arrested in the store after a struggle that left a member of staff with a broken cheekbone.

A small amount of heroin was found in his left glove when he was arrested, Guildford Crown Court heard on Thursday, May 19.

Valentine, wearing a long black wig, a black skirt and a pair of dark sunglasses, and carrying a handbag, managed to escape after being confronted by members of staff, David Dyer, 59, and Frazer Wilson, 24.

Mr Wilson suffered a broken left cheekbone and chipped a bone in his right arm during the struggle, while Mr Dyer suffered a cut to the head which bled profusely, Guildford Crown Court heard.

Judge Christopher Critchlow said: “Two members of the staff and two members of the public assisted in preventing you from completing the robbery.

“I commend the courage of Mr Dyer and Mr Wilson, both of whom were injured.”

Valentine, who worked at a barber's in Feltham, then stayed with Price's girlfriend Paula Jones, 29, in a hotel.

He later tried to flee to the West Indian island of St Lucia, but was arrested onboard a plane at Gatwick Airport after Jones informed the police of his travel plans.

Jones' tip-off to the police was said to be "in (her) favour" by Judge Critchlow.

She was also subsequently arrested at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey after suffering a drug overdose.

Valentine and Price pleaded guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit a robbery.

Jones pleaded guilty to assisting an offender.

Surrey Comet:

David Castle, representing Raymond Price, said: "This was a somewhat amateurish attempt.

"They have been subjected to ridicule because (Mr Valentine's) dress was falling down and his wig was half off".

Surrey Comet:

Valentine (pictured above), of Carlton Road, Walton-on-Thames, had been jailed for nine years in 1999 for a series of armed robberies and attempted armed robberies.

Sentencing, Judge Critchlow told Valentine: "You went (to Cradler's House Jewellers) with the aim of getting jewellery to sell for drugs, or for drug debts, or just to get money.

"You disguised yourself as a female. (It was) not a very successful disguise."

Valentine was jailed on Thursday (May 19) for six years.

His partner wept as Judge Christopher Critchlow read out his sentence, and left the courtroom in tears as Valentine went down to the cells.

Surrey Comet:

Price (pictured above), of Thames Mead, Walton-on-Thames, said by his solicitor David Castle to have been an accomplice.

Mr Castle said: “His role was to wait outside and then, when the situation was under control, go in and remove the property.”

Price was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail.

Jones, also of Thames Mead, was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
