A car fire near the Hook underpass on the A3 near Esher caused the outside lane to be blocked with stationary traffic northbound from Esher Common to Hook.
Fire crews from Painshill, Esher, Epsom and Surbiton were called to the blaze at 4.31pm on the northbound stretch of the A3 between the Kingston bypass at Esher and the Tolworth junction.
The male driver managed to get out before fire crews arrived, who then put out the fire which started in the engine block of the car.
The man was not hurt in the fire.
The blaze in the Vauxhall Astra has now been put out and police attended the scene.
