A privately-run Walton care home has been deemed as unsafe, ineffective and not well-led at times by a health watchdog.

A report, released by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), said staff at the Clare House Care Home in Hersham Road had failed to keep records for residents accurate and up to date, resulting in a lack of important information on some residents.

A breach of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 was identified after investigators found food and fluid charts had failed to be completed for several days prior to the inspection, along with “do not resuscitate” forms by GPs.

Staff were found to be “not as proactive as they could be to provide support to people” in the afternoons, particularly after lunch when “staff did not always appear to be actively visiting people in their rooms”.

The report released last week put the care home in a “requires improvement” category.

It found 11 people out of the 24 working at the care home not up to date in fire safety or moving and handling training.

There were also 12 staff members who did not have up to date safeguarding training, which meant that they “did not have the appropriate and up to date guidance in their role”.

Despite residents applauding the quality of the food served in the home, the report discovered the chef on duty at the time of the inspection did not have a record of diabetic residents.

Residents and relatives did praise the care they received.

A spokeswoman for Bupa, which runs Clare House Care Home, said it acted immediately to address the issues raised in the report. She said: “The health and wellbeing of our residents is our top priority.”
