Esher and Walton MP Dominic Raab has joined a group of MPs donating their pay rises to community groups in their constituencies.

Mr Raab has donated his extra cash to the Elmbridge Community Fund which support charities and voluntary organisations in the borough.

He had already declared he would not accept the MP pay rise if the rest of the public sector was put on a pay freeze or 1 per cent cap.

His rejection of the increase from £67,000 to £74,000 was a “personal choice” as part of a pre-election pledge now fulfilled.

Mr Raab said: "Since I can’t stop the payment being made under law, I have decided to donate it to the Elmbridge Community Fund.

"I have been a founding member of the fund, and it is doing great work supporting community projects and vulnerable people, in a borough that is affluent overall but has pockets of real need.

"We need to build up this fund so we establish a permanent endowment and I hope my modest contribution will encourage others to get behind the initiative."

The donation works out as a monthly contribution of £522.45.

Richard Waller, panel chair of the Elmbridge Community Fund, said: "Although Elmbridge is often perceived as a universally wealthy borough there are pockets of very real disadvantage and many people need extra support.

"The Elmbridge Community Fund works with existing charities and community groups to provide a simple way for local residents to support local communities in need."

Previous grants have included £1,000 to Walton Stroke Club for the group’s new neuro physiotherapy service and £1,300 for Oasis Children’s Centre to create a larger nursery space.

According to donatemypayrise.co.uk 69 out of the 650 MPs have donated their pay rise to charity or their consituency.
