Reporting irresponsible owners could solve the persistent problem of dog fouling, the council has said.

Elmbridge Borough Council want people to become the eyes of their community and report owners as part of a new campaign.

Launched on Wednesday, July 22, it aims to address the frustration of resident groups and businesses who are fed up with the hotspots of fouling.

Councillor Glen Dearlove, portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “We have recently served two £50 fixed penalty notices on irresponsible dog walkers, neither of which would have been possible without the initial reports from local people.

“I urge communities who are fed up with this problem in their area to get in contact with us and help get the message across that there is a social and financial penalty for the offender.”

Posters warning dog owners that they are being watched will be displayed around the borough, in the hope of reminding them of the fines they could be given if they fail to clear up after their pet.

Postcards encouraging residents to report irresponsible owners to the council will be distributed to community groups, schools, libraries and pet shops.
