The Liberal Democrats have held on to Long Ditton after Councillor Neil Houston was voted in at last night’s byelection.

The results do not affect the political control of Elmbridge Council as the Conservatives still hold 33 of the 60 seats.

Coun Houston made the move to Elmbridge after he lost his seat in Surbiton last May. He received 770 votes.

The byelection was triggered by Councillor Toni Izard standing down.

Not far behind was Conservative hopeful Hugh Evans, who gained 661 votes.

Susannah Cunningham, for UKIP, had 61 votes and Laura Harmour, representing the Green Party, received 79.

Steve Bax, Conservative Councillor for Molesey East, tweeted: "Lib Dems win Long Ditton by-election. Congrats to Neil Houston. Gutted for Hugh Evans. He tried so hard and his time will come."

Less than a third of voters - 32.2 per cent – turned out to the polls.
