A group of horses ran free on the A3 before being rounded up by police and returned to their field.
Commuters reported seeing about six horses galloping northbound towards the M25, near Cobham services, at about 9am.
Jess Positive tweeted: "Horses running up the A3 in wrong direction from junction 10 to services, police at the scene, drive with caution."
Marland Yarde, Harlequins and England rugby player, said: "Casually just seen 6 horses running up the A3 in the wrong direction with no owner in sight #The Great Escape."
A Surrey Police spokesman said: “Officers attended and the horses went back to their field at around 9.20am. There were no reports of any injuries or collisions as a result of the incident.”
