A man convicted for killing a friend with a single punch has lost his appeal.

Patrick Conway, now 23, struck and killed Patrick Lawless, his 20-year-old childhood friend, in Teddington during birthday celebrations in 2012.

March 18 2014: Man guilty of manslaughter after punching friend on 21st birthday

The violent disorder started outside the Royal Oak pub, Teddington, on November 10 and continued for some time, before Conway punched Mr Lawless and he slumped to the floor in Field Lane.

He suffered a brain haemorrhage and died.

Conway, formerly of St John's Road, East Molesey, admitted his involvement in a mass brawl, which broke out between about 30 people, but denied the manslaughter of his friend after the fight had broken up.

After a five-week trial at Kingston Crown Court, Conway was sentenced to four years and nine months for manslaughter and 12 months for violent disorder, to run concurrently, on April 16, last year.

On Friday, May 8, he appealed against the conviction at the Court of Appeal, claiming footage shown of him fighting with a friend should not have been included in evidence.

The application was refused as Lady Justice Sharp, Mr Justice Sweeney and Judge Eleri Rees QC upheld the conviction and the length of Conway's sentence, saying the evidence was overwhelming that the punch was the cause of death.
