Conservative Dominic Raab has been re-elected to his Esher and Walton seat for a second term after increasing his majority to more than 28,000.

Delivering his speech after the result was announced shortly before 4:45am, Mr Raab thanked the council staff for their help on the night of the vote count and also councillors and family members who have supported him.

He added: “We are delighted with the turnout which is pretty important because we are trying to rebuild the trust in politics.”

Speaking to the Elmbridge Comet, Mr Raab said: “[I’m] really chuffed. We hoped that the majority would go up, we hoped that the turnout would be high but I suspected we hadn’t hoped to expect that having doubled the majority last time we wouldn’t increase it with such a significant amount.

When asked what he will focus on first, he said: “Two big things, around making sure we have got the school places we need and there’s a really exciting new scheme to deliver new healthcare centres.”

Mr Raab received 35,845 votes - up from 32,134 in the 2010 election - despite the turnout figure dropping from 72.4 per cent to 71.5 per cent.

This time around, Labour (Francis Eldergill) finished in second place with 7,229 votes while UKIP (Nicholas Wood) made their way to third place with 5,551, pushing the Liberal Democrats (Andrew Davis) its fourth place with 5,372 votes.

The Green Party (Olivia Palmer), Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol (Matt Heenan) and Independent Citizen Candidate (Della Reynolds) received 2,355, 396 and 228 votes respectively.

Speaking after the result, Mr Eldergill said: “I’m very pleased with the result, I think clearly, obviously, an improvement on last time. I think particularly with having the other candidates, to increase the vote was a very good result. Third last time, second this time, first next time.”

Despite the Liberal Democrats finishing two places lower than in 2010, Mr Davis said he was pleased with the outcome.

He said: "It’s just what I’m looking for as a national turn. I’m looking forward to the local elections tomorrow [May 8] that’s going to be very interesting for us.”
