Sirens filled the air and countless sightings of police cars were reported by people in the Hersham and Weybridge area for much of yesterday.

A man in his 50s was found dead, reportedly in a van, in Assher Road, Hersham, at about 10am. Firefighters were also called to the scene.

PC Neil Bourn told concerned people on Facebook he had been involved in a chase during the day.

He said he came across two males believed to be dealing drugs in an alleyway, who both ran off.

Police swarmed the area, and PC Bourn said: "Gave chase on foot, one detained Rydens Grove, the other detained Fieldcommon."

Then at about 4pm people said saw a helicopter overhead in the Brooklands area of Weybridge.

Jennifer Ward said: "I was walking on Brooklands around 4.30pm yesterday with a police helicopter overhead for most of the time.

"Got back to the car park to find five heavily armed policemen after reports of someone firing an air rifle in the woods. Felt quite shocked to see them."

Later still there were reports of officers searching a wooded area in Brooklands at about 10pm and about four or five cars involved in a possible chase in Burwood Road, Hersham.

Hannah Stacey said: "Just been to brooklands and there were two police cars at side of road and the officers were searching the foresty part at side of road with torches."

Jean Hill-Pugh said she had seen "at least 4/5 cars with sirens going speeding up Burwood Road towards Seven Hills about 10.30ish must be something big on for all that noise".

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "Surrey Police were called to Brooklands Industrial Estate, Weybridge just before 4.30pm on Tuesday, 24 March, following a report of a concern for safety.

"A report was received of a man seen in nearby woodland with a firearm.

"NPAS helicopter was deployed and an armed response unit from Surrey Police attended and detained a man in his 20s.

"He has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an air weapon in a public place and is currently in police custody.”
