Ongoing pavement works have left a blind woman feeling trapped in her own home.

Isobel Walker, 60, is registered blind but has struggled for months after her regular route was disrupted by the works.

She said: "I've basically been trapped at home since before Christmas. They are re-doing the pavements and roads near my house and it's chaos. There is no safe corridor for me and my guide dog to walk along, and there are too many obstacles in the way for me to feel safe.

"I've lost weight due to the stress of it all and I can't take my guide dog out as normal. There needs to be more awareness of the problems that street works and general clutter can cause for blind and partially sighted people."

Research by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) showed a third of blind and partially sighted people across the UK had injured themselves while walking the streets where they live.

Fazilet Hadi, director of engagement at RNIB, said: "We shouldn't have to fear bumping into obstacles or not knowing where the kerb is. Local authorities need to take steps to make streets safe for their blind and partially sighted residents."

A county council spokesman said: "As with any works, we try to ensure the minimum disruption possible with appropriate signage and diversion routes."
