An investigation into online offences involving children was recognised with a community heroes award.

The 999 Award, presented to a member of the emergency services or armed forces, was won by Surrey detective constables Kath Tinley, Robert Wood and Peter O'Driscoll.

It was giving following their work on Operation Tendril, which resulted in more than 160 online child victims across 34 UK police forces being identified.

They worked with the child exploitation and online protection centre and the Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Interior Police and Bahrain Public Prosecution. Four men were sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison in Bahrain.

Nearly 300 other victims were identified and more potential targets of the gang were safeguarded.

Detective Chief Constable Nick Ephgrave said: "This area of policing to keep the public safe largely goes unseen and I am thrilled that the team's dedication and hard work has been recognised."

The fourth BBC Surrey Community Heroes Awards took place on Wednesday, December 10, with Surrey Police represented in three categories.
