Conservatives retain control of Elmbridge Council

Elmbridge Conservatives are celebrating picking up one more seat from today's local election count.

The council's new leader, Councillor John O'Reilly, said it had been a good day for the Conservatives.

He said: We've held our majority and gained a seat in St George's Hill with a thumping majority.

"There's tough challenges ahed but we intend to impliment a manifesto which I hope residents will see as progressive.

"We will be concentrating still on getting value for money and keeping the council tax as low as possible.

"At the same time we want to preserve our vital services, which our community so values here.

"But, in the next few years, whoever forms the Government is going to face a very tough challenge and I'm sure local government itself will feel the pinch. So it's not going to be an easy time here, but with the great community spirit we have here in Elmbridge and a solid and mature and inclusive Conservative administration, we can serve as the residents would like us to."

When asked whether holding the council elections on the same day as the nationals had benefited the local campaign, Coun O'Reilly said: "Dominic had an absolutely superb result and I'm sure a large part of our success was also due to the hard work of our local councillors.

"But it's also a vote of confidence in the record of the Conservative administration in the past four years."
