The UK could have an extra hour of daylight every evening, if a parliamentary bill co-sponsored by Richmond Park MP Zac Goldsmith is passed.
The Daylight Saving Bill 2010-11, which received its first reading in the House of Commons on Wednesday, June 30, would require the Government to analyse the potential costs and benefits of advancing time forward by an hour, with a view to then making the change.
The proposal, whose co-sponsors also include Conservative and Labour backbenchers and Green MP Caroline Lucas, is due to receive its second reading in December, when the issue will be debated.
Mr Goldsmith said: “There are many benefits to the UK of adopting single/double summer time. The lighter evenings in the winter would cut the number of road accidents, save energy by reducing demand to have lights on, and help make evenings safer.
“Most important of all, in my view, children would have more time to play outside school.”
