Croydon shopping centre evacuated

Too many chemicals in a toilet could have caused hundreds to be evacuated from a Croydon shopping centre.

Almost 50 firefighters are at Grants Shopping Centre in Croydon after a chemical incident at about 11am this morning.

40 people were evacuated from Virgin Active Gym and a further 200 from the shopping centre. Following an investigation fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus believe they have identified the problem.

Kevin Smith, Croydon Station manager, said: "We think the incident was caused by some chemical products being used in the toilets."

The firefighters are still at the scene ensuring it is safe.

What is Grant's shopping centre? I've lived in Croydon for many years and never heard of it.

Charles, Grants is where the Vue cinema is located, Virgin gym below, can't really call it a shopping centre however...Plus I don't think there was any of the panic as described, 100's of people to be evacuated?
It looked like a minor incident that was resolved swiftly...yawn
