Mystery blaze leaves two homeless Mystery blaze leaves two homeless

A mystery midnight blaze has left two men homeless in New Malden.

New Malden and Surbiton fire fighters were called to Acacia House in Kingston Road, to reports of smoke coming from one of the flats at 12.35am this morning.

New Malden firefighter Robert Lyod said when they arrived a female neighbour and two men who lived in the flat had safely left the building and the fire had gone out.

He said: “There was no great urgency for people to leave their flats so we didn’t need to evacuate the whole block.

“It was a small fire in a flat. There was smoke damage to all rooms but fire damage was concentrated to the living area.”

Firefighter Lyod said the cause of the fire was not known and the two men and woman were treated for smoke inhalation.

He said the flat was fitted with a smoke alarm but he did not think it was working.
