Plans to convert an old pub opposite Hersham station into 29 homes were given the green light after a planning appeal hearing.

Developers appealed Elmbridge Council’s decision to reject two versions of the proposals which were submitted at different dates last year.

The first application, refused permission in July 2011, was for a two-storey apartment building with 11 one-bedroom and 23-two bedroom units, as well as six four-bedroom houses.

The follow-up scheme for a two-storey apartment building, with 13 one-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom homes, and six three-bedroom houses at the rear, was the version granted on appeal by the planning inspector.

Planning inspector Robert Mellor said: “It is concluded overall on this issue that while both schemes are for higher density development than is typical in this residential area, it is appropriate to make efficient use of a site in close proximity to a railway station in order to reduce the number of trips that occupiers will make the car.

“However the appeal A scheme would appear unduly cramped both in the street scene and in the views from the railway.”

The granted development at the old House at Home pub in Molesey Road will include 24 car parking spaces.
