More than 100 Kingston teachers have joined a day of strike action in the capital disrupting ten schools today.

The National Union of Teachers is hosting a march and rally in Westminster, in London, against the government’s proposed changes to pensions.

Bedelsford School and St Philip's School have shut their doors for the day and eight other schools are partially shut, with one or two classes not running.

These are Burlington Infant and Nursery, King Athelstan Primary, King’s Oak Primary, Malden Parochial CofE Primary, St John's CofE Primary, St Paul's CofE Primary, Chessington Community College and Dysart School.

Kingston Council said all other schools are open as usual.

General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers Christine Blower said the latest pension proposals mean teachers will pay more, work longer and get less in retirement.

She said: "The NUT believes it is essential that the teaching profession stands united on this issue.

"Working and taking action together in June and November 2011 brought some concessions from Government, but they do not go far enough."
