A sulphate-munching bacteria has helped a budding scientist earn a ticket to celebrate Commonwealth Day with the Queen.

Hollyfield student Noah Wescombe was among students from three Kingston schools who won tickets to the event at Westminster Abbey next month.

They contributed entries for a jubilee time capsule, a digital collection of videos, photographs and writings about memorable days, to be presented to the Queen later in the year.

Bioengineering enthusiast Noah, 14, wrote about desulphurvibro vulgaris, which may help tackle climate change in the future.

He said: "It will be such an historic event, more so than any other because it’s of such international interest.

"I feel very privileged to be part of the diamond jubilee – I would never have expected to be a part of it."

Hollyfield deputy head Jacqueline Bandara said: "Words cannot describe how happy I am to be able to give a selection of our students a unique opportunity to celebrate our monarch’s jubilee and be part of this amazing event."

Students from Tiffin Girls’ School and Tolworth Girls’ School will also be at the event.
