A man who stabbed two pub regulars with steak knives during a brutal pub brawl worked in a prison kitchen while he waited for his sentence.

Dean Chilver, 24, was given a three-and-a-half year prison sentence for the bloody attack, sparked by a row over last orders at the North Star pub in Hook on March 19.

Nov 2011: Pub regulars stabbed during steak knife brawl in Hook

CCTV footage capturing the horrifying moment he stabbed a pub regular in the back in a beer garden, leaving a pool of blood, was shown to Kingston Crown Court on Monday, December 5.

During sentencing, the court heard Chilver worked in a prison kitchen while in custody.

Judge Andrew Campbell said: “It is fortunate for you that you did not cause more serious injuries. This was a disgraceful incident.

“Some people were badly injured. The landlady was perhaps in danger of losing her licence because of this.”

The fight began when Mark Steemson, a friend of Chilver’s, started a drunken tussle with bar staff after being refused a drink shortly before closing time, the court heard.

At one point, when the landlady came downstairs from above the pub to see what was going on, Chilver waved knives at her.

Glasses were smashed and punches were thrown before Chilver, Mark Steemson, his brother Daniel, and two pub regulars ended up outside.

In the fight, one victim, Anthony Blagrove, received three stab wounds, either from a knife or a broken bottle, and Kerry O’Shea, another regular who also stepped in to help bar staff, suffered a 5cm deep stab wound.

Chilver, who has six convictions for 15 offences, gave no visible reaction as he was sentenced.

The court heard at the time of the attack he had just completed a prison term for hitting someone over the head with a bottle, leaving them needing 15 stitches.

Landscape gardener Mark Steemson, 26, of Hereford Way, Chessington, who has nine convictions for 20 offences, was imprisoned for 16 months after admitting affray at an earlier hearing, despite a plea for leniency.

Daniel Steemson, 25, of the same address, who works for CP Lighting, handed in references to show his good character, but broke down in tears and covered his face with his jumper after he was sentenced to 10 months for affray.
